What Does Radiant Heating Mean?

The general definition of radiant heating is the movement of heat from one object to another without warming the space between. This is different from convection heating (movement of heat through the air) and conduction heating (movement of heat through contact). In practical use in a home, it means heating a room by raising the temperature of an object in it. The object sends out heat waves which warm up other objects they come into contact with.

In a home, the way a radiant heating system usually works is through hydronics: water is heated in a boiler and then sent to baseboard heaters or radiators. A new popular form of radiant heater is the in–floor heating system, which sends the heated water through a subfloor that heats up the floorboards. There are also electrical versions as well.

Some Advantages of an In–Floor Heating System

Why has in–floor heating become popular during the last decade? There are a number of reasons. Here are a few of the advantages of installing in–floor heating:

  • Energy efficient: Using hydronic heating is already a highly energy efficient way of warming a house, even just using old–style radiators, because water is a more effective heat transference medium than air. In–floor heating takes this to another level because it evenly spreads heat from below, allowing for faster warming of a room and less need to run the system.
  • Cozy: Radiant in–floor heating simply feels better than most other types of heating. The sensation of a toasty warm floor on a cold January morning—there’s nothing better than that!
  • Improved indoor air quality: Without a furnace fan that blows out dust and other pollutants from ductwork, an in–floor heating system helps keep down the amount of contaminants in a home’s air. This is especially beneficial in a household with people who have allergies or asthma.
