Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators in Denver, CO
One of the main reasons for trouble with indoor air quality in modern homes is that residential construction doesn’t permit a house to “breathe” well, i.e. allow fresh outdoor air to circulate. Of course, this design is done on purpose to prevent the loss and gain of heat around the year. A household with windows wide open on a cold winter night or a hot summer day won’t enjoy comfort unless the heating or air conditioning system is putting in an immense amount of work.
Is there a way to get around this dilemma? Can you enjoy fresh air in your house without having to waste energy heating or cooling it? The answer is: yes! With a heat recovery or energy recovery ventilator professionally installed, you can have great indoor air quality without steep utility bills or an uncomfortable home. Cool Sunshine Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. offers service for ERV and HRV systems in Denver, CO and the surrounding areas, so contact us to learn more.
How Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators Work
Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are installations integrated into the ventilation system of a home. Both draw in currents of air from outside the home and then use air from indoors to either pre–cool or pre–heat the fresh air. In this way, the HRV/ERV system recovers the energy already used to heat or cool the indoor air and applies it to the incoming fresh air.
For example, on a cold day during the Denver winter, chilly fresh air enters the ventilation system and passes through the HRV/ERV, where it is drawn through a counter–current of air from indoors. This air is already warmed up by the home’s heating system, and its heat moves to the cold current as the two pass through each other (a process called counter–flow heat exchange). The fresh air is now pre–heated as it enters the home, preventing the energy originally used to heat the air from going to waste.
How ERV and HRV Systems Benefit a House
The biggest benefit of using energy or heat recovery ventilators is that they let a home enjoy fresh outside air without the downsides of temperature extremes and power wasted running either the AC or the heater more than necessary. On average, and HRV or ERV recovers around 80% of the energy used to cool or heat a home; that’s energy that would go to waste if a house were opened to the outside in order to enjoy fresh air. A properly installed HRV or ERV system means a house with healthier, fresher air and energy bills that don’t spiral out of control.
