Summer is progressing right along and we’re using our air conditioners on a consistent basis. And those AC systems go through a lot of work in our area. They accumulate wear and tear during all this as well. This is why it’s so important that you take care of your cooling system properly!
The best way to do this is by scheduling maintenance each year. It’s typically best to schedule these tune-ups in the spring, before you need your air conditioner the most. But it’s more important that you are consistent with scheduling them, regardless of the time of the year.
Still though, even with maintenance you might run into operational problems every now and then. One of the most common repair calls we get is in response to someone’s air conditioner making a strange or alarming noise. We’ve shared below some of the most common signs of AC disrepair by the sounds they make. Read on to learn more!
Is Your AC Hissing or Gurgling?
Depending on where the problem is occurring along your air conditioning system, you may hear hissing or gurgling. What is this problem? A refrigerant leak!
There’s a still common misconception among homeowners that refrigerant is something that’s meant to leave the system and be refilled on occasion–like gasoline from a car. But refrigerant isn’t a fuel. It’s a fluid that allows your air conditioner to actually do its job and cool the air. If your system is losing refrigerant, it means you have a leak and this will be detrimental for your air conditioner if not managed properly.
If the refrigerant is in gas form, you may hear hissing or something that sounds like air being let out of a tire. Gurgling can indicate it’s in liquid form. Either way, it needs to be dealt with ASAP.
Do You Hear Grinding?
This is likely a problem with the air handler, or the component of your cooling system tasked with circulating air throughout the home while the system is running. The air handler’s motor is put under a lot of strain while the system is functioning. To help it cope, the system has a number of oiled bearings.
Eventually, however, these bearings wear down, causing friction on the air handler motor to increase. This is a natural part of wear and tear; however, the friction will cause a grinding noise while the system is running. The bearings do need to be replaced; otherwise, your AC system can overheat and burn out.
Is Your Cooling System Short-Cycling?
This is the name given to the process where your air conditioner rapidly turns on and off without ever completing a full cooling cycle. Short-cycling is both the symptom of an existing problem and the cause of further problems, since it creates accelerated wear and tear.
If you think or suspect your AC is short-cycling, it’s time to give us a call!
