Summer is here! Well, actually, it’s been here for a while now. Hopefully, if you’ve been using your air conditioner consistently, it’s been working reliably for you!
But what if it hasn’t? What if you have noticed yours isn’t quite up to the job of keeping you cool this summer? If you’re doubtful, there’s no time like the present to start looking into new AC systems—but don’t rush (more on that below).
We don’t want you to be without your air conditioner any longer than you need to be during the hottest time of the year, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes another repair just won’t cut it—it may be time to replace your system. But how do you know if this is the case?
Your System is Old!
An air conditioner that has proper maintenance done each year and is generally well cared for otherwise will last about 10-15 years. So what this means is that if yours if over 15 years old, it’s likely time to at least consider an upgrade. After this time, air conditioners start to accumulate chronic problems that will leave you calling for frequent, potentially costly repairs, bringing us to our next point.
Your System Needs Frequent Repairs
Needing an AC repair every now and then isn’t a big deal. Every few years, in fact, you’ll likely need something in your air conditioning system repaired, even if you have routine maintenance done each year. However, if you find yourself calling for air conditioner repairs multiple times a year, it’s time to talk to us about your replacement options.
Your System Costs More to Use
As your air conditioner ages, it slowly starts to lose its efficiency as the components within it wear out. At first, this efficiency loss might not even be noticeable. Eventually, though, it will start becoming so severe that the cooling system will be forced to operate for longer periods of time to compensate, which is bad for the system.
Don’t Rush Your AC Purchase!
All this said, we absolutely understand the urge to rush to buy a new air conditioner, when it’s already getting so hot. But we really have to encourage you to consider your decision carefully. There are a number of different air conditioners on the market today, and one that’s right for a particular home may be the wrong choice for another.
Additionally, size matters! You probably already know that too small of a system won’t be able to effectively cool your living space. But too large of a system can be just as detrimental to your home comfort—it will go through a process called short-cycling, where it turns on and off rapidly. This wears down on the system, leading to more frequent repair needs and potentially even premature replacement.
