How to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

woman-blow-noseWe’re comfort specialists, which means we can help keep the temperature in your home just right. But temperature is not the only aspect of home comfort! Indoor air quality can be just as important, especially if airborne contaminants are making you sick or if you have allergies or asthma.

Indoor air quality is often much worse than the quality of the outside air, up to 5 times worse, but we can help. Follow our tips on how to make your indoor air quality fresh and clean.

Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilation

One of the reasons indoor air quality can be so much worse than the outdoors is that a tightly-sealed home keeps stale air recirculating over and over again. Opening up a window would severely effect the efficiency of your heating and AC equipment, but heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) solve this problem.

An HRV lets fresh air in from the outside, but it puts it through a heat exchanger first. The outside air gains heat in winter or loses heat in summer to let fresh air circulate through your HVAC system without any major affect on efficiency.

Humidification

Dry air is a big problem in our area, and a heater alone cannot really fix the problem. Improve your indoor air quality significantly with the addition of a humidifier. You should know, though, that portable humidifiers do little to help with chronically dry air. A whole-house humidifier installed by HVAC technicians is usually the best bet.

Air Cleaning

Air purifiers and air filtration systems are available from your local HVAC technicians. As we’ve said, we are comfort specialists, which means we don’t only deal with temperature! We stock UV air purifiers to kill off germs in the air along with air filtration systems and air purifiers that keep particulates from circulating. Just call to find out what system might be the best fit for your home after a consultation.
